Ecological Design Regulation EU 2023/1670
EU 2023/1670 is developed based on the framework of the EU Energy Directive (ErP Directive 2009/125/EC), and also adopts the concept of the sustainable ecological design regulation ESPR for products, which controls the durability, maintainability, and recyclable material content of products. Intended to improve the environmental impact of products throughout their entire lifecycle.
• Product scope: Products within the scope of ecological design regulations: smartphones, other mobile phones, cordless phones, tablets.
• Products not under control: mobile phones and tablets with partially or fully foldable screens.
Ecological Design Compliance Assessment
Chapter 4 of EU 2023/1670 specifies the requirements for ecological design conformity assessment. The compliance of ecological design should be achieved through internal design control as described in Annex V of the ErP Directive or management system review as described in Annex V, in accordance with the conformity assessment procedures outlined in Chapter 8 of the ErP Directive 2009/125/EC.
Regarding Energy Efficiency Labels EU 2023/1669
Smartphones and tablets must display relevant information on their energy efficiency, battery life, dust and water resistance, and fall resistance on the product. This is also the first time that products in the EU market have been required to display maintainability ratings. This energy label will help EU consumers make wiser and more environmentally friendly purchasing decisions and promote sustainable consumption.
The corresponding contents of the numbers on the label are:
Energy Efficiency Grades A-G
The energy efficiency rating of the product
The durability duration of each battery cycle and the number of minutes required for each full charge
Drop resistance level (A is the strongest, E is the weakest)
Battery durability cycle number
Maintainable level (A is the easiest to repair, E is the most difficult)
Waterproof and dustproof rating
