Regulatory updates
On May 20, 2025, the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) released the EU’s new chemical database, ECHA CHEM, for the Classification and Labeling of Substances (C&L Inventory). The database contains over 4400 EU level substance classification information and 700000 REACH registration or notification classification information. Overall, the inventory contains data on approximately 350000 substances.
When the database was first launched in January 2024, ECHA CHEM integrated classification and labeling information, and at that time the database contained over 100000 REACH registration information submitted by companies. The new inventory aims to help users easily find categories with the highest consistency and make the sources of classification information clearer. It integrates the latest regulatory updates, such as the new CLP hazard categories, and aims for stable growth.
In this first version, classification information is presented in a visual format of matter, and future versions will explore supplementary methods such as application programming interfaces (APIs).
Background
ECHA maintains the largest chemical database in the European Union, combining industry submitted data with information generated from EU regulatory activities. ECHA CHEM is a solution for sharing large amounts of information hosted by institutions with the public.
The next step of ECHA CHEM’s development will include an overview of regulatory activities regarding chemicals and their REACH restriction decisions under chemical laws. This will further enhance the transparency of chemical information and facilitate public access.
